Genograms in an intercultural context: a first step for intervention

Résumé/Abstract

Genograms constitute a valuable tool for mental health practice in an intercultural context. They help create an atmosphere of trust while drawing out different aspects of the situation of immigrant families, such as family composition, health, and occupations, over several generations. Mapping the overall situation generates a more accurate reading of events that may affect the mental health of the person who has immigrated. The nurse is better informed and can thus target priority interventions to address the health needs of the person and their family.
